Albert Einstein

This is a one-month elective taught in conjunction with a required rotation for second year Beth Israel Family Medicine residents. The course is offered annually in April. Goals of the course are to provide basic skills in nutritional assessment and therapeutics, use of herbals and dietary supplements, and applications of mind-body medicine. The course is taught by an interdisciplinary faculty including physicians, chiropractors, acupuncturists, osteopaths, and nutritionists. We are one of six sites for the Integrative Family Medicine program led by University of Arizona; to qualify for this program applicants must be enrolled in the Beth Israel Residency in Urban Family Practice. We are also a site for the Bravewell Fellowship in Integrative Medicine. In addition we have a year-long, one half-day per week CME-type fellowship for physicians and other health professionals. Integrative Medicine Training for Allied Health Practitioners (e.g. nursing, psychology, physical therapy)

We offer a one half-day per week, one year long training program in integrative medicine for allied health professionals and physicians. For details contact Ben Kligler (bkligler@chpnet.org).

We offer a professional education module on Integrative Treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome available with CME credit through our website at www.healthandhealingny.org. Similar modules for other disease conditions are planned for the future.

Duke University

An elective weekend retreat is provided annually for Duke medical students at the beginning of the academic year. Retreat activities center on self-care and team building.

Monthly lunch conferences are focused on topics of interest to the students as reflected in a student survey administered during the first monthly session. These range from Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) interventions such as Acupuncture and Nutrition to broader topics such as Physician Burnout and the overall mission of Duke Integrative Medicine (IM).

2^nd year Duke medical students participate in five week-long Clinical Core modules, which precede their different clinical clerkships. Within most of these week long modules, Duke IM presents themes related to Mindfulness, complementary approaches to cancer, self-care or general prevention. We also facilitate participation for all these second year students in a Community Practitioner program, in which they spend a half-day each Clinical Core week shadowing non-MD health practitioners. This includes 6 licensed acupuncturists, massage therapists, and chiropractors from the Durham community. Duke IM faculty also teach components of the pre-clerkship offerings in Ob/Gyn and General Internal Medicine.

During this 2-week Selective, students complete a personal health risk assessment. They receive training in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, receive personal health coaching, attend Duke IM weekly case conferences, and shadow clinicians in the Duke IM clinic and in the local community. A project and presentation are also required.

This is a 4-week, full-time 4^th year elective that explores the issues presented in the second-year course in significantly more depth and seeks to link with each student’s medical career interests. Duke IM faculty, staff, and community practitioners mentor and teach in this elective, which devotes efforts to self-care, self-inquiry, health assessment, health coaching, evidence assessment in complementary and alternative medicine, and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. A project and presentation are also required.

Duke IM’s 3-hour Integrative Medicine Fair is a required activity for the entire Duke fourth year medical class. Over 40 practitioners from Duke and the surrounding communities participate. In 2007, the event was held in the new Duke IM Health and Healing Center, and was structured around the five NIH National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) classifications (i.e. Mind Body Therapies, Alternative Medical Systems, Biologically Based Therapies, Manipulative and Body Based Therapies, and Energy Therapies).

Elective experiences are sometimes arranged for Duke residents on a case-by-case basis, when circumstances align well with a particular resident’s interests and availability. Other programmatic initiatives are in development, focused on self care and based on earlier pilot work with Duke resident group.

Over the past 3 years, Duke has worked with the Bravewell Philanthropic Collaborative and the University of Arizona (U of A) to provide a two year faculty development experience, for which Duke health care professionals ( MD, DO, NP, PA) may apply. This includes didactic training through the U of A’s Fellowship in Integrative Medicine and professional contribution at Duke Integrative Medicine. The second class of Duke Faculty is now underway. The ability to offer these faculty development opportunities in the future will be contingent on funding.

George Washington University

Two week full time elective for 3rd or 4th year medical students, offered throughout the year. It is primarily an observational experience in an integrative clinical environment. We have 4 MDs, 1 ND and 12 practitioners ranging from acupuncturists, manual therapists, hypnotherapist, Reiki master, nutritionist, etc. Space may be limited depending on availability.

Four week full time program similar to the student elective. Length of program can be flexible. Participation in patient assessment depends on previous experience. Tailored to needs of individual.

Harvard Medical School Osher Research Center

The Division for Research and Education in Complementary and Integrative Medical Therapies at Harvard Medical School invites candidates to apply for a three-year, NIH funded research fellowship to begin July 1, 2008 or 2009. This joint teaching program of Harvard Medical School-affiliated teaching hospitals offers candidates the opportunity to obtain an M.P.H. degree, as well as clinical experiences in complementary and integrative medicine. Physician candidates who are BC/BE in family medicine or internal medicine by the beginning of the fellowship are preferred, but physicians trained in other specialties will also be considered. Applications from non-physician, doctoral level candidates will also be accepted. The deadline for applications for the year beginning July 1, 2008 will be reviewed on a rolling basis and the deadline for July 2009 is September 30, 2008. Mayo Clinic

The Complementary and Integrative Medicine (CIM) Program at Mayo Clinic is active in research, practice and education following the Mayo model of care. The program has several ongoing studies supported by NIH and foundation grants. The accepted fellow will work with and be mentored by one of the several experienced faculty with the Complementary and Integrative Medicine (CIM) Program. In addition, the fellow will be encouraged to collaborate with any of the specialties of choice at the Mayo Clinic. The fellow will also participate in all other aspects of the two-year fellowship research training including attaining a Master's of Science Degree in Clinical Research from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. McMaster University

This is a clinic based elective at the Family Practice Centre of Integrative Health and Healing in Burlington Ontario. The length of time is up to the medical student, however we suggest between 2-4 weeks. This elective is primarily an observational experience in an integrative clinical environment. We have 2 integrative primary care MDs, 1 integrative medicine consultant MD and 6 CAM practitioners. The student will have an opportunity to spend time with all the practitioners and gain an understanding about integrative medicine and inter-disciplinary approaches to patient centered care.

Oregon Health Sciences University

Four weeks in duration. This is a combination of clinical experiences with chiropractic, Oriental medicine, natural medicine and massage, as well as nutrition and basic training in how to research CAM treatments. A short paper is written on a CAM treatment of choice to demonstrate research abilities.

Oregon Health & Science University participates in the family medicine residency program in integrative medicine. This is an additional year of residency and collaborates with the University of Arizona's distance learning program.

University of Alberta

The Complementary and Alternative Research and Education Program (CARE), Stollery Children's Hospital, University of Alberta, offers two-week clinical electives for undergraduate medical students. In CARE clinic, students will gain exposure to the practice of evidence-based integrative medicine in a pediatric context. Currently, health care providers in this clinic include experts in care in traditional Chinese medicine, naturopathy, and massage therapy, who work in collaboration with conventional health care providers to deliver advice to families on complementary therapies they are considering for their children. Participants in these electives may also gain exposure to other aspects of this organization's mandate, including its research and education portfolios.

Pediatric Integrative Medicine Fellowship: Stollery Children's Hospital, University of Alberta The Complementary and Alternative Research and Education (CARE) Program, part of the Division of General Pediatrics at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, is offering a clinical Fellowship in Pediatric Integrative Medicine. This program is not accredited by The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The fellowship is focused upon providing opportunities to integrate skills and concepts about healing and wellness which represent the best evidence in both conventional and complementary medicine. The fellow will learn about a broad range of CAM topics, emphasizing the evidence base for each, and use this information to inform children and families, students as well as clinic and CARE employees. The CARE team will serve as mentors, teachers and role models for developing an integrative medical practice. The fellowship will follow general guidelines, but will be tailored to meet each fellow’s strengths and interests. The Canadian Pediatric Complementary and Alternative Medicine Network, hosted by the Complementary and Alternative Research and Education Program (CARE), Stollery Children's Hospital, University of Alberta, regularly offers continuing education workshops and collaborates with other organizations to deliver training and education in integrative medicine in the pediatric context. The focus of such workshops is to advance the research agenda and research quality in pediatric CAM, and foster collaboration between CAM practitioners and researchers. University of California, Irvine

Offered as a 4-week fourth year elective with community practitioners, who are MDs practicing integrative medicine and who are CAM providers (chiropractors, acupuncturists, massage therapists etc). It is very popular and often oversubscribed.

Residents are able to do clinical rotations with MDs who practice IM and with CAM practitioners in the community and to discuss and write up the experiences.

University of California, San Francisco

“Culture and Integrative Medicine” is an interdisciplinary, 2-week elective offered each Fall for 4^th year UCSF medical students. It is taught by a medical anthropologist, physicians and CAM practitioners (TCM, Ayurveda, Tibetan Medicine, Naturopathy, etc). Students participate in didactic and experiential sessions, rotate through integrative medicine practices in the community and at UCSF’s Osher Center and have the opportunity to attend an all-day retreat in Shamanic Healing. UCSF Family and Internal Medicine residents have the opportunity to see patients one half-day/week at the Osher Center Integrative Medicine Practice during their ambulatory rotations under the guidance of Dr. Kevin Barrows, one of OCIM’s integrative medicine physicians. We hope to extend this clinical experience to community sites (both private practice and underserved settings).

The Osher Center offers a 3-year post-doctoral training program in integrative medicine research (TRIM: Training in Research in Integrative Medicine). Two fellows/year (MD, DO or PhD) will receive academic training in clinical research and exposure to diverse CAM and integrative approaches to patient care. Integrative Medicine Training for Allied Health Practitioners (e.g. nursing, psychology, physical therapy)

A clinical elective for students of the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine is being planned at the Osher Center Practice. Undergraduate students will have the opportunity to shadow the three licensed acupuncturists who practice at OCIM and doctoral students will see patients under the supervision of our TCM practitioners.

CAM Grand Rounds are offered approximately quarterly. In addition, physicians and other allied health professionals who participate in our 8-week long Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction Program, have the option of receiving CME credit for it.

University of Colorado

The elective is a semester-long combination of didactic, experiential, and shadowing exposure to a wide variety of CAM practices. Students meet weekly for an hour for 18 weeks and also spend a half-day (or more if they like) shadowing CAM practitioners at the Center for Integrative Medicine. Though we'd love to have students from other institutions, it's not practical at this point unless the student has other activities planned here to occupy the rest of the time!

The elective is 2 weeks of nutrition and 2 weeks of CAM. The CAM time is spent shadowing community CAM practitioners as well as shadowing CAM practitioners in The Center for Integrative Medicine here at the University of Colorado Hospital and Health Sciences Center. In addition, there are up to 2 didactic sessions on communicating with patients about CAM and on Western Herbs, and a syllabus, textbooks, videos, and online resources are used to enhance the learning experience. Integrative Medicine Training for Allied Health Practitioners (e.g. nursing, psychology, physical therapy)

Allied health practitioners from all of the Health Sciences Center schools (SOD, SON, SOP, CHA/PA, PT/OT) have lectures in their curricula about integrative medicine and are offered the chance to spend time at the Center for Integrative Medicine as they would like. They are also welcome to join in the medical student elective and are active members of the Complementary Alternative Integrative Medicine Student Interest Group. Our psychologists at TCFIM also precept/mentor psychology graduate students from the University. Given the nature of the AHP training, it's not practical to sponsor students from other institutions, with the possible exception of psychology externships (3 months to 1 year). University of Connecticut

Offered as a one-month elective for fourth year medical students, the elective will focus on the areas of Integrative Medicine in which the learner wishes to explore. Required and elective readings as well as learning about the current evidence-basis and research in the field will be included. Much of the elective is designed to allow participants to work with local clinicians from various integrative medicine disciplines/areas such as Ayurveda, TCM/Acupuncture, Mind-Body, Naturopathic, Osteopathic, Nutrition & others. University of Michigan

This elective exposes students to physicians in the community and at the University who incorporate complementary, alternative, holistic and integrative medicine approaches into their clinical practices. Student learning is supplemented with didactic presentations, experiential sessions, case-based learning and evaluation of the literature related to mind-body medicine, bodywork, herbal medicine, nutritional approaches, energy medicine and lifestyle/health promotion strategies. Expected requirements include active participation and a case presentation to peers in an oral and written format using evidence based investigation of complementary modalities/integrative medicine healing systems.

The Integrative Medicine Fellowship provides core clinical training for family physicians working to successfully care for diverse populations of patients. The fellowship trains physicians to skillfully integrate the best of conventional and alternative medicine while preparing each fellow for a leadership role in the emerging field of Integrative Medicine. The Integrative Medicine Fellowship is scheduled one month during each of the three years, which allows time to learn about and experience various modalities, interact with Integrative Medicine physicians and alternative providers, focus on self-care, and develop an integrative approach to caring for patients. Fellows also undertake twelve additional months of training beyond the three-year residency period to develop an individualized approach to the clinical practice of Integrative Medicine.

The University of Michigan has 1-3 credit elective courses for graduate students in the Schools of Social Work, Public Health, and Nursing in the area of botanicals, mind-body health and energy-based therapies. The College of Pharmacy offer students exposure to herbal therapeutics and complementary modalities. An integrative health certificate program for enrolled graduate students is in the planning stages.

A series of on-line modules in four areas of Integrative medicine (mind-body medicine, botanicals, manipulative medicine and foundations of wellness) is currently under development. These modules are designed for family medicine residents.

A 2-day CME in integrative medicine is offered to update professionals on research and clinical evidence related to the safety and efficacy of a wide number of therapeutic approaches related to complementary, holistic and integrative medicine.

University of Minnesota

The course is a 3-week course elective available to third and four year medical students. Students delve into the vast area of CAM though site-visits, small group discussions, lectures, and independent research projects. The specific objectives include:1) acquire knowledge on the principles and philosophy of holistic care; 2) demonstrate enhanced understanding of indications for a CAM referral; 3) describe how a patient care plan can integrate CAM therapies; 4) identify the role of self-care in professional and personal life. The course was started in 1998 and continues at the University of Minnesota campus offered twice a year in October and April. A similar rotation is now offered in Hawaii during February. The location of study is on the Big Island, in cooperation with Five Mountains Healing Center and the North Hawaii Community Hospital.

Within the Family Medicine Residency program at the University of Minnesota - residents can design their own elective CAM rotation pursuing areas of interest within the integrative medicine field.

University of New Mexico

UNM SOM offers a 4-week elective in CAM, available to fourth year medical students. Preceptor: Stan Handmaker MD. Students, working with the preceptor, design their own experience, scheduling time with UNM and community providers in Integrative Medicine. Students write a descriptive paper about their experience at the end of the rotation.

Residents in primary care specialties can spend a month at the UNM Integrative Medicine Clinic. Preceptor: Brian M. Shelley MD. Residents see patients at the IMC, and also complete a web-based curriculum.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

"Fieldwork in Alternative & Complementary Therapies" PMED 452 (also FMME 452). Offered during any 4-week elective period to 4th-yr medical students. Students will observe and participate in the delivery of health care in the practice setting of one or more alternative/complementary care providers. Such providers may include practitioners of chiropractic, homeopathy, herbal medicine, or mind-body therapies. Students are expected to take an active role in designing their elective, identifying one or more practitioners who will be approved by the faculty advisor and submitting a list of their personal goals and strategies. The student is required to keep a daily journal of experiences as well as prepare a Powerpoint presentation on a topic that has been agreed upon by the coordinator, the clinical faculty member and the student. PM&R CAM Selective Rotation Physicians in physical medicine and rehabilitation (physiatrists) treat patients with acute and chronic medical, musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. Many of the physiatrists utilize mobilization, physical modalities, exercises, behavioral changes, biofeedback and nutritional supplements, as an extension of their practices. Learning Objectives: 1) Describe the philosophy, therapeutic uses, mechanisms of action, indications, contraindications, side effects and current research on efficacy of selected CAM therapies potentially utilized in PM&R practice. 2) Describe the risks associated with selected CAM therapies and what possible interactions there might be with conventional treatment plans. 3) Recognize the applicability of selected CAM therapies for PM&R patients. 4) Identify patients for whom, because of attitude and philosophy or clinical condition, CAM approaches to health and optimal functional status would be appropriate. 5) Locate information on selected CAM therapies and assess the validity and evidence-base for the information presented. 6) Provide advice to patients based on needs about appropriate CAM therapies and their individual application. Learning Activities: 1) Complete required readings. 2) Observe application of several selected CAM therapies by chosen practitioners. These might include nutritional assessment and counseling/treatment, acupuncture (including moxibustion), magnetic therapies, mindfulness meditation, naturopathy, homeopathy, chiropractic, osteopathic manipulation, Chinese herbal assessment and counseling/treatment, and Medwell offerings such as hypnosis and biofeedback. 3) Experience a new technique for stress management and self-care such as yoga, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, mindfulness training, or meditation. Optionally, residents may seek a CAM treatment not previously experienced, i.e. OMT, acupuncture. Describe the importance of self-care as a frame of reference for interacting with patients regarding CAM treatments. 4) Present a case study to peers describing the evaluation of a patient and suggested CAM therapy. Have peers provide feedback. Elective Evaluation: (Note: these are initial ideas about program eval) 1. Complete a pre/post test on specific application of selected CAM therapies to PM&R issues. This will consist of a case scenario for which resident will identify the therapeutic action, efficacy and safety of selected CAM modalities. a) Questions re: philosophy, therapeutic cases, etc as described in objectives 1&2 b) Questions re: application as in objectives 3&4 2. Evaluation of residents’ case presentations, using structured evaluation form (to be designed). To encompass learning objectives 1-6.

Since 1999, UNC-PIM has sponsored professional conferences on herbal medicine and integrative care, providing a meeting ground for both conventional and CAM health-care providers. The fifth conference, “Improving Outcomes Through Integrative Practice” was held on March 18-19, 2005.

University of Pittsburgh

This is a 1 month full-time elective offered from September through May, open to 3rd and 4th year medical students and residents from multiple specialties, with limited availability for students from other institutions. Students are exposed to an interdisciplinary model in a physician-centered integrative medicine program, with 12 complementary medicine modalities offered. Additionally, students spend time with community preceptors in integrative medicine and other complementary therapies. University of Texas Medical Branch

This is a four week Elective in Integrative and Alternative Medicine (residents may take for 2 weeks). Offered monthly except May, June, and December. Includes clinical site visits – students will have an opportunity to work with alternative and Integrative Medicine practitioners in the Galveston and Houston area, spending at least 5 half-days per week with alternative practitioners observing their clinical practice. Includes weekly scheduled seminars with designated course faculty, student book club seminars, and self-study online educational modules. Students also present at the Alternative and Integrative Medicine Journal Club, devise a personal wellness plan, experience a massage and other alternative treatments. They also prepare a scholarly paper on an integrative topic, treatment, or condition of their choosing which will be published online at our website. This is a self designed elective. Students choose to work with a provider and then they get approval from their advisor.

Residents may self design an elective month, and then get clearance from the residency director.

We use the modules available on our black board platform for students to work through at their leisure. This is not for credit.

The Department of family medicine has continuing education conferences on this topic woven into their grand rounds schedule.

The Integrative Medicine (IM) Elective Rotation through the Dept. of Family Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health is a fulltime rotation for 2-4 weeks for fourth year medical students. It is available year round and open to students of other medical schools as well as those of UW-Madison. Learning objectives include: 1. To promote self-exploration/self-care. 2. To develop an understanding of Integrative Medicine. 3. To explore an area of interest within Integrative Medicine. The curriculum involves required reading, independent reading on a topic of interest within IM, writing a definition of health and devising a personal health plan, seeing patients in the Integrative Medicine Clinic and assisting in the development of their health plans, and experiential learning with holistic practitioners. The Academic Integrative Medicine (AIM) Fellowship in the Dept. of Family Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health is one of the few worldwide that allows participants to combine academic and Integrative Medicine interests into one overall two-year fellowship experience. The purpose is to train physicians to create positive change in health care delivery. As part of the AIM fellowship, fellows are enrolled in the intensive online IM curriculum made available through the University of Arizona and attend three one-week sessions in Tucson. AIM fellows engage in a continuous process of self-reflection relating to personal health, see patients 4 half days/week, choose one or two healing modalities for focused study, participate in educational and research projects, and are expected to become board-certified with the American Board of Holistic Medicine. Two-day conferences are offered on a biennial basis for health care practitioners, including allied health professionals. These conferences explore pathways to health and healing. Past topics have included mindfulness as well as integrative approaches to headaches, myofascial pain, mindfulness, lipid management, and GI health.

Wake Forest University

During the second year, students may participate in an elective to learn how to provide therapeutic touch and healing touch and to communicate compassionately. This elective occurs in 90 minute blocks over 7 sessions in summer or fall depending on student interest. It is theoretically open to other students, but because of scheduling, it is unlikely to fit schedules of other students. Furthermore, most of our integrative medicine training is INTEGRATED into the curriculum. That is, cases in the organ systems courses include items that encourage students to think about treatments such as diet, stress management, massage, specific dietary supplements, homeopathy, etc appropriate to the specific clinical context.

PA students receive a lecture in integrative medicine. Any level of trainee from any profession may "Shadow" Dr. Kemper in her consultations or second opinion clinic.
