Catching up with LEAPS Graduates

This is a continuing series where we spotlight LEAPS graduates to see how the program has impacted their lives.

Michael Vizachero, University of Michigan, Class of 2014 (LEAPS 2010)

Wellness Week
The leaps program was a transformational experience for me. It opened my eyes to the many facets of IM as well as the power of yoga, and nutrition through the experience at Kripalu. I am planning on pursuing a fellowship in IM and went into family medicine in no small part to my LEAPS experience. Inspired by the other medical students attending the program, I went back and proposed a community garden at my medical school and went on to promote various student wellness activities through our student government.

My LEAPS project consisted of a week-long event for the medical student community that featured various lunch talks and evening activities, each surrounding different aspects of wellness. This included physical wellness talks with a personal trainer, "personal trainer sessions" where medical students taught other students various fitness concepts, cooking and nutrition classes, meditation classes, etc.

Exposure: 100
This was carried forward as an annual event. This also helped spur creation of a wellness committee under our student government that focused on various aspects of student wellness, of which I was a member and leader. From inspiration of the other students involved in LEAPS I also began the process of creating a medical school community garden, before going on to residency.
