Spotlight on Consortium Working Groups

In each issue of the Consortium Newsletter, we will be focusing on one of the Working Groups (Research, Clinical, Education and Policy) which are the vehicles used to move the field forward as a great Consortium member benefit. If you and individuals within your organization are not yet involved in a working group, we encourage you to do so. If you missed the prior spotlights, please email info@imconsortium.org and ask for copies.

POLICY WORKING GROUP - NETWORKING, RESOURCES, MENTORING

The Policy Working Group (PWG) is for those interested in learning about and potentially influencing local and national health policy with respect to integrative healthcare. The PWG is focused on increasing access to care and spreading awareness of the merits of integrative medicine and health to local policymakers and healthcare administrators.

The Consortium's experienced consultant, Janet Kahn, is an invaluable guide for the PWG through her ties with the newly appointed Surgeon General, staff at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, integrative healthcare representatives on the AMA Committees that influence CPT coding and other reimbursement-related decisions, as well as non-profits active in this field.

Here is a sample news brief shared with PWG members this week:

A Tool You can Use for Presentations: Look up your County's Health Status:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention maintains a Community Health Status Indicators 2015 webpage. "It is an interactive web application that produces health profiles for all 3,143 counties in the United States. Each profile includes key indicators of health outcomes, which describe the population health status of a county and factors that have the potential to influence health outcomes, such as health care access and quality, health behaviors, social factors and the physical environment." It builds upon data from the County Health Rankings and Roadmaps, America's Health Rankings, Healthy People 2020 and other sources.

Consortium Will Sign Onto a Letter to Protect the Prevention Fund:
The Prevention Fund, which has provided much needed money to communities in every state for public health efforts, and which supports innovations which, if proven, can help all our communities, is under attack from some in Congress.  The Consortium will join other professional health organizations in sending a letter supporting the Prevention Fund in the FY 2016 Congressional Budget.

What You Can Do:

  • Contact us if you'd like to be the Policy champion for your institution.
  • Contact us if you don't want to be the Policy Champion but would like to join the PWG and receive our emails.
  • Send us links, articles, ideas and other resources that you think would be of interest to your PWG colleagues.

We look forward to working with you,
