March 28-April 22, 2016
BEN LOMOND, CA

HEART-IM is an AMSA sponsored elective clerkship for fourth-year medical students to explore what it means to be a healer and how we can embody that identity throughout our careers. Twenty-five students from around the country will spend four weeks living cooperatively at a retreat center in the redwoods practicing various forms of integrative medicine, gaining tools to incorporate patient advocacy and social justice into their careers, and reflecting on their path to becoming healer-physicians. Expert physicians, healers, and teachers will lead didactic and experiential sessions in topics including:

  • effective communication
  • physician wellness
  • end-of-life care
  • narrative medicine
  • social determinants of health
  • energy medicine
  • integrative medicine for underserved populations
  • reflective and meditative practices
  • clinical nutrition

Time for individual and group reflection, informal teaching and learning from each other, and exploring the outdoors will be planned into a robust schedule. Students will receive 4 weeks of elective credit.

Integrative Psychiatry
Incorporating Integrative Medicine Into Your Psychiatric Practice

April 7-10, 2016
Hilton Garden Inn/Cherry Creek
Denver, Colorado

Interest in Integrative Psychiatry has exploded in the last 5 years. Few resources exist to help the practitioner implement this new paradigm and tool kit into psychiatric practice. Our faculty has been developing and practicing this work for decades. We have designed a unique program that supports the practicing psychiatrist or mental health prescriber and targets the ability to quickly apply these tools in a busy clinical practice upon completion. Clinical problems addressed include: depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, bipolar disorder and psychosis. Up to 29 CME credits can be earned. April 9-10, 2016
St. Paul, Minnesota

The Penny George Institute for Health and Healing launched a nurse-based aromatherapy program across 11 Allina hospitals in 2012 with great results.

From Feb. 1, 2012, to June 30, 2014, our aromatherapy program:

  • Assisted nurses in delivering more than 21,500 aromatherapy applications delivered to approximately 15,800 unique patients.
  • Assessed patient reported outcomes including reductions in pain, nausea and anxiety scores by 32-50 percent.

One of our goals is to assist other organizations in building a safe, cost-effective, sustainable aromatherapy program. We hope you will consider sending someone from your organization to the Penny George Institute’s workshop. The workshop will cover:

  • the holistic nursing model as a foundation for aromatherapy
